Roger Christie is an American marijuana advocate and founder of The Hawai'i Cannabis Ministry, a Rastafarian church based in Hilo, Hawaii. He has been a vocal proponent of the legalization of marijuana for religious and medicinal purposes.
Christie gained national attention in 2010 when he was arrested by federal authorities for his involvement in the distribution of large amounts of marijuana. He was charged with conspiracy to manufacture, distribute, and possess with intent to distribute marijuana, as well as other drug-related charges.
During his trial, Christie maintained that his use and distribution of marijuana was protected under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which guarantees religious freedom and protection from government interference. However, the court ultimately ruled against him, and Christie was sentenced to five years in federal prison.
Despite his imprisonment, Christie continues to advocate for the legalization of marijuana and the protection of religious freedom. He remains a controversial figure, with supporters lauding him as a champion of individual rights and opponents criticizing him for his involvement in illegal drug activities.
